FEMA Virtual Public Open House to Discuss Updated Floodplain Maps
Join us online January 21st
Bayfield County recently received preliminary floodplain maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Based on these updated maps, some property owners will have a structure or more of a structure that may now fall within the floodplain. These affected property owners will be sent mailed notices regarding the meeting.
Other property owners may now have a structure or more of a structure that falls outside of the floodplain. These changes reflect FEMA’s use of improved data and technology to provide more accurate flood risk information for our community.
We want to make sure the public has the chance to learn about these updates and ask questions.
FEMA will be hosting a Virtual Public Open House, and we encourage you to join:

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this change my zoning?
No. The updated maps do not change zoning regulations. They only update the boundaries of the floodplain based on FEMA’s new data.
Why is FEMA updating the maps?
FEMA periodically updates floodplain maps using improved technology and data to provide more accurate flood risk information.
What does being in a floodplain mean for my property?
If a structure on your property is being moved into a floodplain, you may be required to carry flood insurance, floodplain zoning regulations apply, and certain building requirements may apply.
Who can I contact with questions?
Ruth Hulstrom, Director of Bayfield County Planning and Zoning, at 715-373-3514 or ruth.hulstrom@bayfieldcounty.wi.gov.
